Project Type

Ice Arena / Institutional / Municipal / Recreation Facility

Location

Richmond BC

Timeline

Phase 2 executed in 2025

Project Overview

Spectrum Painting was engaged by PCL to complete Phase 2 of the structural steel truss rehabilitation program at the Richmond Ice Centre. The project involved hazardous materials abatement, surface preparation, and full recoating of exposed roof trusses above active ice surfaces, delivered within fixed shutdown windows and under strict municipal and institutional standards.

Scope

  • Hazardous materials abatement and controlled coating removal
  • Surface preparation and corrosion renewal
  • Priming and full finish coating of exposed structural steel roof trusses
  • Implementation of containment, fall protection, and environmental controls

Key Areas Included

  • Over-ice structural steel roof trusses
  • Weld joints and connection points
  • Repetitive long-span steel members across the arena roof structure

Institutional & Municipal Execution at Scale

This project demonstrates Spectrum Painting’s ability to deliver technically demanding work within active municipal facilities. The Richmond Ice Centre features large-span roof trusses directly above ice surfaces, requiring high-level access, specialized equipment, and disciplined execution by crews of approximately 15 personnel.

Phase 2 work was completed within tightly defined maintenance and shutdown windows aligned with arena programming and public use.

Hazardous Materials Abatement & Coating Integration

The scope included hazardous materials abatement integrated directly into the coating program. Existing coatings identified for removal were addressed using controlled containment methods, worker protection systems, and regulated disposal procedures before the application of a new high-performance coating system.

This integrated approach reduced risk, maintained compliance, and ensured continuity between abatement and finish coating activities.

Consistency Across Repetitive Structural Steel Elements

The arena roof structure consists of repetitive truss members and continuous steel elements requiring uniform surface preparation, adhesion, and finish quality. Spectrum applied standardized abatement and coating procedures across all scheduled substrates to achieve consistent results throughout the full roof structure.

Dedicated, ticketed crews experienced in overhead steel and arena environments supported repeatable outcomes across extensive linear spans.

Safety-First Coordination in an Active Facility

All work was performed at height directly over ice surfaces, with strict fall protection, containment, and environmental controls in place. Activities were carefully sequenced to align with facility operations, ensuring zero disruption to adjacent skating rinks and programmed public use.

Close coordination with the GC and facility stakeholders supported safe execution and predictable progress throughout Phase 2.

Quality Control, Testing & Compliance

The project was delivered to municipal and institutional standards and verified through independent third-party MPDA inspections. Quality assurance measures included:

  • ASTM adhesion testing
  • Dry film thickness (DFT) measurements meeting manufacturer requirements
  • Uniform, opaque finish verification
  • Full compliance with MPI standards

Interim and final inspections confirmed performance, coverage, and finish consistency across all coated substrates.

Durability & Long-Term Performance

Coating systems were selected to withstand moisture, condensation, and temperature cycling typical of ice arena environments. The completed work supports extended service life of the structural steel while reducing long-term maintenance demands for the facility.

What This Project Represents
