BCIT NE12 Steel Tower

Project Overview
Spectrum Painting was engaged to complete surface preparation and protective coating application to the NE12 steel tower structure at BCIT in Burnaby — a technically complex project requiring execution under WorkSafeBC high-risk lead abatement protocols due to significant lead contamination in the existing coatings. Ice blasting was selected as the primary surface preparation method to effectively remove contaminants while minimizing airborne lead dust and eliminating secondary waste streams associated with conventional abrasive blasting. All work was completed under full engineered containment with continuous air monitoring, controlled access zones, and negative air ventilation, with scaffold systems providing safe access throughout. Industrial protective coating systems were applied to the prepared steel structure to deliver long-term corrosion protection and extend asset service life.
